feat(prebuilt): allow ToolNode tools to return list[Command | ToolMessage] (#7596)
## Summary Extends `ToolNode` so that a single tool invocation can return `list[Command | ToolMessage]` instead of only a single `Command` or `ToolMessage`. This brings `ToolNode`'s per-tool-call contract in line with the rest of LangGraph, where nodes can already return multiple Commands. Depends on langchain-ai/langchain#36963 which allows `list[ToolOutputMixin]` to pass through `BaseTool._format_output` unchanged. ## Changes ### `libs/prebuilt/langgraph/prebuilt/tool_node.py` **New list-return gate in `_execute_tool_sync` / `_execute_tool_async`** — After the existing `Command` and `ToolMessage` checks, a new branch accepts `list[Command | ToolMessage]` and routes it through `_validate_tool_command_list`. Lists with non-`Command`/`ToolMessage` elements raise `TypeError`. Both sync and async paths are updated symmetrically. **`_validate_tool_command_list`** — Enforces the terminating-ToolMessage rule: exactly one `ToolMessage` in the list must carry `tool_call_id == <outer_id>` (top-level or nested inside a `Command.update["messages"]`). Zero or multiple terminators raise `_MissingToolMessageError`. Individual Commands in the list are validated via the existing `_validate_tool_command`; when a Command lacks the terminator (which is allowed since the list-level check handles it), the `_MissingToolMessageError` is caught and the already-normalized command from the exception is used. **`_MissingToolMessageError`** — A `ValueError` subclass raised by `_validate_tool_command` (and `_validate_tool_command_list`) when no matching `ToolMessage` is found. Carries the already-normalized command so callers can recover without re-doing deepcopy/message-conversion work. Using a typed exception avoids brittle string-matching on error messages. **`_combine_tool_outputs`** — Flattens list entries at the top of the method so downstream combiner logic (parent-`goto` accumulation, ToolMessage wrapping) is unchanged. **Response processing moved inside try/except** — In both sync and async execute methods, the response validation (Command/ToolMessage/list checks) now runs inside the existing error-handling try block, so validation errors from the list path go through `_handle_tool_errors` like other tool errors. **Return type signatures** widened on `_execute_tool_sync`, `_execute_tool_async`, `_run_one`, `_arun_one` to include `list[Command | ToolMessage]`. ### `libs/prebuilt/tests/test_tool_node.py` New tests covering: valid list returns (top-level terminator, nested terminator, parent-goto + terminator), regression tests for single Command/ToolMessage returns, invalid cases (no terminator, multiple terminators), async parity, integration with mixed list/non-list tool calls, and `_handle_tool_errors` interaction. --------- Co-authored-by: Sydney Runkle <sydneymarierunkle@gmail.com> |

fix(langgraph): don't propagate ReplayState to subgraphs on plain resume (#7561)
**Description:** When clients resume an interrupted subgraph with `Command(resume=...)` plus an explicit `checkpoint_id` in the config (the pattern LangGraph Studio and the API server emit on every resume), the subgraph restarts from its first node instead of continuing at the interrupted node. Fix: gate `ReplayState` propagation on `is_time_traveling` rather than `is_replaying`, so a resume that happens to carry a head checkpoint_id behaves the same as one with just a thread_id. **Verification:** added regression test `test_subgraph_interrupt_resume_with_explicit_head_checkpoint_id` (fails on main, passes with fix, across memory/sqlite/sqlite_aes). Full `test_time_travel.py`, `test_time_travel_async.py`, `test_interruption.py`, and all pregel subgraph/interrupt/resume/replay tests still pass. fix(langgraph): remove strict add_handler type check that breaks OTel instrumentation (#7544)
## Summary
Removes the `add_handler()` overrides on `_GraphCallbackManager` and
`_AsyncGraphCallbackManager` that reject handlers not inheriting from
`GraphCallbackHandler`. This fixes a regression in 1.1.7 where
`opentelemetry-instrumentation-langchain` (and likely other libraries
that patch `BaseCallbackManager.__init__`) crash with `TypeError:
handlers must inherit GraphCallbackHandler` at invocation time.
## Why this is safe
The strict type check is redundant — `_configure_graph_callbacks` and
`_filter_graph_handlers` already filter handlers to
`GraphCallbackHandler` instances at construction time. Non-graph
handlers that enter via external patches (like OTel's monkey-patch) are
harmless because `handle_event("on_interrupt", ...)` /
`handle_event("on_resume", ...)` will simply no-op on handlers that
don't implement those methods.
## What changed
- Deleted `add_handler()` override from `_GraphCallbackManager` (was
lines 248-255)
- Deleted `add_handler()` override from `_AsyncGraphCallbackManager`
(was lines 324-331)
- No other changes — 18 lines removed, 0 added
## Test plan
- [x] All 8 existing `test_graph_callbacks.py` tests pass (`make test
TEST=tests/test_graph_callbacks.py`)
- [x] `make lint` passes
- [x] `make format` passes (no changes needed)
- [x] Verified fix locally: `LangchainInstrumentor().instrument()` +
`create_react_agent()` + `graph.ainvoke()` no longer raises `TypeError`
- [x] Verified the graph lifecycle callbacks (`on_interrupt`,
`on_resume`) still work correctly
Closes #7543

fix: time travel when going back to interrupt node (#7498)
# Fix: Create fork checkpoint on subgraph time travel
## Problem
When time-traveling to a subgraph checkpoint that has an interrupt, and
then resuming, the resume would load the **wrong state** — it would pick
up the original execution's latest checkpoint instead of the
time-traveled one.
This happened because replaying from a subgraph checkpoint never created
a new parent checkpoint. If the replay hit an interrupt before
`after_tick()` ran, no checkpoint was written at all, so the parent's
"latest" checkpoint was still the old one from the original execution.
## Fix
When the loop detects a time-travel replay (not an `update_state` fork),
it now **eagerly writes a fork checkpoint** at the start of the tick.
This ensures:
1. The parent thread's latest checkpoint points to the replayed state
2. Subsequent `Command(resume=...)` calls find the correct checkpoint
3. Stale `INTERRUPT` pending writes from the old checkpoint are cleared
(they reference old task IDs)
Additionally, the subgraph replay logic now uses the **parent checkpoint
ID** (from `prev_checkpoint_config`) when resolving subgraph checkpoints
during time-travel, matching the existing behavior for `update_state`
forks.
## Checkpoint flow diagrams
### Before fix: time travel leaves no fork
```
Original execution:
C0 (start) --> C1 (step_a) --> C2 (ask_1 interrupt) --> C3 (resume) --> C4 (ask_2 interrupt) --> C5 (done)
Time travel to C2 (subgraph config):
Replay runs... hits interrupt... no new checkpoint written.
Parent "latest" is still C5.
Command(resume="new_answer"):
Loads C5 (wrong!) instead of the replayed C2 state.
```
### After fix: time travel creates a fork
```
Original execution:
C0 --> C1 --> C2 --> C3 --> C4 --> C5 (done)
Time travel to C2 (subgraph config):
C0 --> C1 --> C2 --> C3 --> C4 --> C5
\
F1 (fork, source="fork") <-- new latest
Command(resume="new_answer"):
Loads F1 (correct!) --> resumes from the right state.
After full resume:
C0 --> C1 --> C2 --> C3 --> C4 --> C5
\
F1 --> F2 (ask_1 result) --> F3 (ask_2 interrupt) --> F4 (done)
```
### Manual fork via `update_state` (unchanged)
```
C0 --> C1 --> C2 --> C3
\
U1 (source="update") <-- created by update_state()
This path already worked. The fix skips update/fork sources
so existing behavior is preserved.
```
## Changes
- **`libs/langgraph/langgraph/pregel/_loop.py`**:
- Extract `is_time_traveling` flag from the existing replay detection
logic for reuse
- Write a fork checkpoint (`source="fork"`) eagerly at the start of a
time-travel tick, before execution begins
- Clear stale `INTERRUPT` pending writes when creating the fork (they
reference old task IDs that won't match the new checkpoint)
- Unify subgraph replay ID resolution: check `source in ("update",
"fork")` instead of a separate `is_time_traveling` condition, since the
new fork checkpoint now has `source="fork"`
- **`libs/langgraph/tests/test_time_travel.py`** and
**`test_time_travel_async.py`**: Added 4 new test cases (sync + async):
- `test_replay_from_before_interrupt_then_resume` — replays from a
checkpoint before an interrupt, resumes with a new answer, and verifies
the full checkpoint history (source, next, values) at each stage
- `test_subgraph_time_travel_resume_from_first_interrupt` — time-travels
to a subgraph's first interrupt, resumes both interrupts with new
answers, and verifies the fork creates a new branch while preserving the
original
- `test_subgraph_time_travel_resume_from_second_interrupt` —
time-travels to a subgraph's second interrupt, resumes with a new
answer, and verifies the first interrupt's original answer is preserved
- `test_subgraph_time_travel_checkpoint_pattern` — verifies the fork
checkpoint branches from the correct replay point and that the full
checkpoint tree is correct after resume
- **`libs/langgraph/tests/test_pregel.py`** /
**`test_pregel_async.py`**: Updated existing
`test_weather_subgraph_state` to account for the new fork checkpoint
appearing in history (history length increases by 1)

fix: populate assistant_id from config configurable instead of metadata (#7468)
## Description The `_build_server_info` function was reading `assistant_id` and `graph_id` from `config["metadata"]`, but the server puts these values in `config["configurable"]`. This updates the source to read from `configurable` consistently. ## Test Plan - [ ] Verify `server_info.assistant_id` and `server_info.graph_id` are correctly populated from `config["configurable"]` _Opened collaboratively by Sydney Runkle and open-swe._ Co-authored-by: open-swe[bot] <open-swe@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Sydney Runkle <54324534+sydney-runkle@users.noreply.github.com> |

test(langgraph): use monotonic clock in flaky streaming test (#7477)
Switches test_sync_streaming_with_functional_api to time.monotonic() for both emitted task timestamps and observed arrival times so the assertion is based on a monotonic clock instead of wall time. This makes the streaming timing check less flaky on systems where time.time() can jump or lack sufficient precision. feat(langgraph): add graph lifecycle callback handlers (#7429)
## Summary This change adds first-class graph lifecycle callbacks to LangGraph so interrupt and resume transitions can be observed without overloading the existing LangChain custom event system. It introduces a dedicated graph callback manager and wires lifecycle emission through Pregel execution in both sync and async paths. ## Changes - **`libs/langgraph/langgraph/callbacks.py`**: Adds `GraphCallbackHandler` and `GraphCallbackManager` (built on LangChain base callback classes), plus config plumbing via `graph_callbacks` and `get_graph_callback_manager_for_config`. - **`libs/langgraph/langgraph/pregel/_loop.py`**: Introduces `GraphLifecycleEvent` and records lifecycle transitions (`resume`, `interrupt`) into an internal FIFO queue with `shift_graph_lifecycle_event()`. - **`libs/langgraph/langgraph/pregel/main.py`**: Resolves graph callback manager from config and drains lifecycle events while loop execution progresses, dispatching `on_resume` and `on_interrupt` consistently in sync and async runtimes. - **`libs/langgraph/tests/test_graph_callbacks.py`**: Adds sync and async coverage verifying lifecycle callbacks fire correctly and remain distinct from LangChain `on_custom_event` handlers. --------- Co-authored-by: Eugene Yurtsev <eyurtsev@gmail.com> |

chore: uv lock resolution (#7342)
## Summary
Adds native uv workspace/lockfile support to the LangGraph CLI's Docker
build pipeline. Instead of listing dependencies manually, users can
point at their existing `uv.lock` and the CLI will:
1. Discover workspace packages and their dependency graph
2. Export locked requirements via `uv export --package <name> --frozen`
3. Copy only the necessary workspace closure into the container
4. Install packages in dependency order with `--no-deps` for
reproducibility
5. Rewrite all import paths (graphs, auth, encryption, etc.) to
container paths
### New config field: `source`
Rather than using `pip` or `uv pip`, we add a new `uv_lock` installer.
The previous installers should still remain unchanged.
To avoid ambiguity, we discriminate by "source" field and **do not
permit** other arbitrary "dependencies". In this mode, we will treat the
provided root (defaults to the current directory) as the source of
truth.
This also would natively support uv workspaces, so you can specify the
target package within a larger workspace.
**Simple single-package project:**
```json
{
"python_version": "3.11",
"graphs": {
"agent": "./agent.py:graph"
},
"source": {
"kind": "uv"
}
}
```
**Multi-package workspace with explicit package:**
```json
{
"python_version": "3.11",
"graphs": {
"agent": "../../apps/agent/src/agent/graph.py:graph"
},
"source": {
"kind": "uv",
"root": "../..",
"package": "agent"
}
}
```
**Traditional pip deployment (unchanged):**
```json
{
"python_version": "3.11",
"dependencies": ["langgraph", "my-package"],
"graphs": {
"agent": "./agent.py:graph"
}
}
```
Config validation enforces mutual exclusivity. you must use either
`dependencies` or `source`, not both.

fix: execution info patching (#7406)
## Summary - Fixes a bug where `runtime.execution_info` is `None` in the distributed runtime (LangGraph Platform) because tasks are prepared by the server and deserialized in the executor, bypassing the OSS `_algo.py` code that normally creates `ExecutionInfo` - Adds `_ensure_execution_info()` in `_retry.py` that lazily constructs `ExecutionInfo` from the task config when it's missing, called in both `run_with_retry` and `arun_with_retry` ## Why PR #7363 introduced `ExecutionInfo` on `Runtime`, populated during task preparation in `_algo.py`. However, on LangGraph Platform (distributed runtime), tasks are serialized by the server and deserialized in a separate executor process — `_algo.py` task prep never runs in that context, so `execution_info` remains `None`. Any user code or tooling relying on `runtime.execution_info` (e.g. for tracing, logging, or auth) would fail with `None` fields. The fix reconstructs `ExecutionInfo` from config keys (`checkpoint_id`, `checkpoint_ns`, `task_id`, `thread_id`, `run_id`) that are already present in the deserialized task config, so no server-side changes are needed. ## Test plan - [x] `_ensure_execution_info` is a no-op when `execution_info` already exists - [x] `_ensure_execution_info` creates `ExecutionInfo` from config when missing - [x] Falls back to `task.id` when `CONFIG_KEY_TASK_ID` is absent from config - [x] End-to-end `run_with_retry` test simulating the distributed runtime scenario (runtime with `execution_info=None`) |

feat: enhance runtime w/ more execution information (#7363)
## Summary
Enhances `ExecutionInfo` and `Runtime` to surface richer execution
context and introduces `ServerInfo` for LangGraph Server metadata.
### `ExecutionInfo` expansion
Converted from `NamedTuple` to a frozen `dataclass`. Added identity
fields populated during task preparation in `_algo.py`:
| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|-------|------|---------|-------------|
| `checkpoint_id` | `str` | required | Checkpoint ID for the current
execution |
| `checkpoint_ns` | `str` | required | Checkpoint namespace for the
current execution |
| `task_id` | `str` | required | Task ID for the current execution |
| `thread_id` | `str \| None` | `None` | Thread ID (None without a
checkpointer) |
| `run_id` | `str \| None` | `None` | Run ID (None when not provided in
config) |
| `node_attempt` | `int` | `1` | Current node execution attempt number
(1-indexed) |
| `node_first_attempt_time` | `float \| None` | `None` | Unix timestamp
for when the first attempt started |
`checkpoint_id`, `checkpoint_ns`, and `task_id` are required (no
defaults) — they are always populated during task preparation in
`_algo.py`. `Runtime.execution_info` is `None` until that point.
### New `ServerInfo` type
Frozen dataclass with `assistant_id: str`, `graph_id: str`, and optional
`user: BaseUser | None`. Populated from config metadata (`assistant_id`,
`graph_id`) and `configurable["langgraph_auth_user"]` via
`_build_server_info()` in `pregel/main.py`.
User detection uses `isinstance(BaseUser)` with a `hasattr("identity")`
fallback — needed because the server's `ProxyUser` provides
`permissions` via `__getattr__`, which Python's `runtime_checkable`
Protocol check doesn't see.
### `Runtime` changes
- `execution_info` is now `ExecutionInfo | None` (default `None`), set
during task prep
- Added `server_info: ServerInfo | None` field, wired through `merge()`
and `override()`
### `ToolNode` / `ToolRuntime` forwarding
`execution_info` and `server_info` are forwarded from `Runtime` to
`ToolRuntime` so tools can access execution and server context.
### New public API surface
```python
from langgraph.runtime import BaseUser, ExecutionInfo, Runtime, ServerInfo, get_runtime
```
## Test plan
- [x] `ExecutionInfo` defaults, patch, and frozen behavior
- [x] Integration tests verifying identity fields are populated in sync
and async execution
- [x] Retry tests confirming identity fields persist and `node_attempt`
increments
- [x] `ServerInfo` construction, frozen behavior, and `Runtime.merge`
precedence
- [x] `server_info` populated from config metadata and
`langgraph_auth_user` (including starlette-style proxy user)
- [x] `server_info` is `None` when no server metadata present
- [x] `ToolRuntime` forwarding of `execution_info` and `server_info`

fix(langgraph): avoid recursion limit default sentinel collision (#7355)
This changes the fallback `DEFAULT_RECURSION_LIMIT` from `10000` to `10007`. Today `merge_configs()` treats the default recursion limit as a proxy for "not explicitly set", so using a round number like `10000` creates possible collision risk with user-supplied values. Moving the fallback to `10007` slightly reduces the chance that an explicitly chosen recursion limit is mistaken for the implicit default while we keep the current merge semantics. Created with [Deep Agents CLI](https://docs.langchain.com/oss/python/deepagents/cli/overview) using gpt-5.4 (provider: openai). |

feat: Add LangSmith integration metadata to langgraph (#7203)
Adds ls_integration metadata to agents created via langgraph: `ls_integration:langgraph` Only sets the value if the key doesn't already exist so that we don't override the `ls_integration` field set in [deepagents](https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents/pull/1837), [langchain](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/pull/35810). feat: add execution info to runtime (#7143)
- [x] **Add tests and docs**: If you're adding a new integration, you must include: 1. A test for the integration, preferably unit tests that do not rely on network access, 2. An example notebook showing its use. It lives in `docs/docs/integrations` directory. - [x] **Lint and test**: Run `make format`, `make lint` and `make test` from the root of the package(s) you've modified. We will not consider a PR unless these three are passing in CI. See [contribution guidelines](https://docs.langchain.com/oss/python/contributing/overview) for more. Additional guidelines: - Make sure optional dependencies are imported within a function. - Please do not add dependencies to `pyproject.toml` files (even optional ones) unless they are **required** for unit tests. - Most PRs should not touch more than one package. - Changes should be backwards compatible. |
