End-to-end encryption
ENCRYPTION_FEATURE_ENABLED turns on client-side end-to-end encryption of documents through the shared encryption service (suitenumerique/encryption). It is off by default, and the flag is read at runtime, so the same image can run with the feature enabled in one environment (e.g. pre-production) and disabled in another (e.g. production). When it is off, the frontend never loads the encryption SDK and shows no encryption option at all.
Enabling it implies:
- A deployed instance of the encryption service. Users' browsers must reach it at
ENCRYPTION_VAULT_URL(itsdata.host, which serves the SDK and the vault iframe) andENCRYPTION_INTERFACE_URL(its interface host). Both must be set, otherwise the feature stays off. - That instance must be configured for this frontend: its
ALLOWED_FRAME_ANCESTORSmust list this application's origin, it must use the same OIDC provider (users are matched on thesubclaim), and it must share the same registrable domain as the other products for the browser to share keys between them (for exampledocs.example.com,drive.example.com,encryption.example.comanddata.encryption.example.comall sit underexample.com; an encryption service hosted onencryption.other-domain.comwould keep a separate key store per product). - Use with caution. Encrypted content can only be read by users holding the keys: the server cannot recover it, and a user who loses both their device keys and their backup loses access to their encrypted documents. Do not enable it in production without a validated deployment of the encryption service and a tested recovery process.
impress-frontend image
These are the environment variables you can set to build the impress-frontend image.
Depending on how you are building the front-end application, this variable is used in different ways.
If you want to build the Docker image, this variable is used as an argument in the build command.
Example:
docker build -f src/frontend/Dockerfile --target frontend-production --build-arg PUBLISH_AS_MIT=false docs-frontend:latest
If you want to build the front-end application using the yarn build command, you can edit the file src/frontend/apps/impress/.env with the NODE_ENV=production environment variable and modify it. Alternatively, you can use the listed environment variables with the prefix NEXT_PUBLIC_ (for example, NEXT_PUBLIC_PUBLISH_AS_MIT=false).
Example:
cd src/frontend/apps/impress
NODE_ENV=production NEXT_PUBLIC_PUBLISH_AS_MIT=false yarn build
| Option | Description | default |
|---|---|---|
| API_ORIGIN | backend domain - it uses the current domain if not initialized | |
| SW_DEACTIVATED | To not install the service worker | |
| PUBLISH_AS_MIT | Removes packages whose licences are incompatible with the MIT licence (see below) | true |
Packages with licences incompatible with the MIT licence:
In .env.development, PUBLISH_AS_MIT is set to false, allowing developers to test Docs with all its features.
⚠️ If you run Docs in production with PUBLISH_AS_MIT set to false make sure you fulfill your BlockNote licensing or subscription obligations.
