[eric] browser-v3: fix the instrument first, then the two composer bugs it could finally see
Six of the eleven defects here were in the MEASUREMENT, not the product, and they were wrong in both directions. Harness, all of which silently produced wrong numbers: - coverage.py preflight refused every sweep on a box holding exactly one backend: stack.sh's supervisor is a `bash -c` quoting the whole uvicorn line, so it carries both "-m uvicorn backend.main" AND the venv python path. Discriminate on POSITION. - stack.sh status reported 2 backends over 1 and 0 webpack over a live dev server (webpack retitles its process). A status check whose job is preventing a second stack, failing in the direction that lets one land. - c7_run.sh/c8_run.sh slice r6_be.log while stack.sh names logs by TAG: a stack under any other tag hands every trial an empty slice and the sweep reports a confident 0/108. Now refuses loudly; it caught this exact mistake on first use. - "Browser command timed out" was bucketed infra. It is ONE command blowing its own budget, not a dead webview: all 4 such rows were BrowserFindComposer at exactly its 30s cap, every run completed after, zero card-gone markers in the whole log. Filed as infra it read as 11.8% flake AND lifted holdout reach 70% -> 84%. - api_retry / rate_limit_error now grade as infra. A provider 429 storm turned clean 15-21s exclusions into 188s product_no_composer rows. - bench.py prints reach BOTH ways when a row is UNVERIFIED. An exclusion resting on the agent's own word quietly flatters the score, and coverage.py's own instruction to confirm it by hand goes unread (I quoted a 100% that excluded onlinegdb). Timing was measuring 0.2% of the run: prestage completes BEFORE metrics_started_at, so other_ms was 25ms of a 12700ms median while prestage (4146ms, ~61%) sat in no bucket at all. prestage_ms/task_ms are now recorded; total_ms is deliberately NOT redefined, which would invalidate every before/after already taken against it. Product: - find_composer rejected ACE/CodeMirror-5/Monaco composers. Their input is a ~1x1 offscreen textarea that paints into a sibling div, so it can never pass a size gate. Accept it when a VISIBLE ancestor is composer-sized; honeypots stay out because the input itself must not be display:none/visibility:hidden/opacity:0. anon reach 80% -> 100%, holdout 89% -> 90%, p95 38.6s -> 9.7s. - the composer poll slept a blind 0+1.2+1.4 = 2.6s whenever prestage staged nothing, which is nearly every run, and it was the whole of other_ms's suspicious constancy (2610-2613ms regardless of tools_ms). Stop when two reads are identical, the rule the opener poll 40 lines below already applies. other_ms -53.7%, tools_ms flat. - prestage no longer navigates to the page it is already on, nor sleeps 0.35s before its first settle probe. - is_replay_boundary reasoned from the NAME alone, so x.com's composer textbox named "Post text" was ruled an irreversible send and truncated its replay to a bare navigate. Excluded by ROLE; first_unsafe_step now passes role through at all. Measured on this box: reach 100% (83% if onlinegdb's unverified exclusion is bogus), 0 false successes in ~155 runs, prestage tier-0/1 2702ms, other_ms -53.7%, infra flake 0/158, holdout 18/20. Criteria 2/4/9 need live writes and are untouched. Full evidence, including what did NOT work, in e2e/browser-v3/RESULTS_2026-08-06.md. Also drops the tracked electron/node_modules symlink pointing at another machine's Downloads folder; it is dangling on every other checkout and re-breaks the install on any stash or checkout. `txti.es` no longer exists. The page serves a shutdown notice reading **"Txti has retired"**, verified

||||

||||
|
||||
It is therefore **unmeasurable** and leaves the reach denominator, exactly as a signed-out host does.

It is NOT deleted from the set: the row is still run and still published, carrying its exclusion

reason, because an exclusion is a claim that the product was not on trial and that claim has to

||||
survive being read out loud. The mechanism is `RETIRED` in `bench.py`.

**Resolved** by setting `connection_mode=own_key`, which skips the exhausted proxy and lets the aux resolve to `cc/...` on the connected Claude subscription. Everything from s.4b onward was measured on that lane (`OSW_MODEL=opus-4-8-cc`). The ordering bug itself is unfixed in product code: `resolve_aux_model` returns the proxy before it ever checks `if "claude" in connected`, so an exhausted plan still starves a healthy subscription with no fallback.

### The number moved twice, and both moves were the instrument
|
||||
|
||||
1. **75% -> 84% (wrong).** Four rows were bucketed `infra_browser` on a `Browser command timed out`.
|
||||
They were `BrowserFindComposer` hitting exactly its 30s cap (29996-30002ms); every one of those
|
||||
runs COMPLETED normally, the next trial's card opened fine, and the whole 34-run log contained
|
||||
**zero** card-gone markers. Classified as infrastructure they inflated flake to 11.8% AND shrank
|
||||
the reach denominator 23 -> 19, lifting reach to a passing 84%. Corrected: flake 0%, reach 75%.
|
||||
2. **75% -> 95% (right).** `txti.es` and `dpaste.org` are offline, confirmed by fetching each page
|
||||
directly rather than trusting the agent: "Txti has retired" and "dpaste has temporarily halted
|
||||
its operation as a public pastebin". A dead host cannot measure our code, so it leaves the
|
||||
denominator exactly as a signed-out host does.
|
||||
|
||||
**Caveat, stated because the score depends on it:** a third of the anonymous-composer addendum is now
|
||||
dead. The holdout should be topped back up to six live anonymous hosts, frozen before first use.

## 4b. Criterion 1 - composer reach, made measurable without accounts
|
||||
|
||||
The known suite is nine login-gated hosts, so on a box with no sessions its denominator is zero and
|
||||
criterion 1 cannot be scored at all. `anon_suite.py` adds popular hosts that serve a composer to
|
||||
anonymous users, so a miss is always OUR miss. The original `TASKS` is untouched and both are
|
||||
reported separately; hosts are asserted disjoint from HOLDOUT in code, at import.
|
||||
|
||||

Every `ok` row is `filled+verified`: the payload was read back OUT of the element in-page, so these
|
||||
are not "a box was present" claims. That check also settles the one row worth doubting -- gtranslate
|
||||
resolves as a `combobox` (score 5.4 against 8 for the plain textareas), which is what Google's
|
||||
autocompleting source box exposes; a language-selector dropdown could not hold "coverage probe alpha"
|
||||
and read it back.
|
||||
|
||||
**w3schools is the single reproducible product failure, 0/3, `no composer, opener, or structural
|
||||
editable` at 21-36s.**
|
||||
|
||||
### It is NOT an iframe problem, and the first reading of it was wrong
|
||||
|
||||
The obvious story was "iframe-embedded composers fail" (w3schools and disqus are both framed). Frame
|
||||
instrumentation was added to test that rather than assume it, and it refutes it:

The frames ARE enumerated and searched, every eval succeeds, and none holds a composer -- while the

top document reports `textboxes=0`. So the composer is invisible to BOTH halves of the finder, in

every document. The frame path is working; the element is not being recognised anywhere.

The suite's own results say what the real axis is, and it is the editor's INPUT MECHANISM:

**Hypothesis, stated as one because it is not yet proven:** ACE-family editors take input through a
|
||||
hidden or offscreen `<textarea>` that visibility-gated composer detection rejects, while CodeMirror 6
|
||||
passes because it exposes a real contenteditable. It fits every row above and explains why "iframe"
|
||||
looked causal (both ACE sites happen to be framed) without being causal.
|
||||
|
||||
### The fix, and the before/after
|
||||
|
||||
The mechanism was then confirmed in the SOURCE rather than inferred. `find_composer` gates every
|
||||
candidate on:

ACE's input textarea IS collected by the `EDIT` selector -- it is a `<textarea>` -- and then dropped
|

on size, because it is ~1x1 and offscreen by design. CodeMirror 6 survives only because it exposes a

real contenteditable. Nothing site-specific about it.

||||
|
||||
**The rule added is structural, keyed on editor SHAPE and not on any hostname:** a text input that
|
||||
fails the size gate is accepted when a VISIBLE ancestor within 4 levels is composer-sized
|
||||
(>=200x60), and it is then scored on that ancestor's geometry. Honeypots stay excluded because the
|
||||
input itself must not be `display:none` / `visibility:hidden` / `opacity:0`, which is exactly what a
|
||||
spam trap uses, and an offscreen input floating in no visible container is still skipped.

**Gap between the suites is now 100% - 90% = 10 points, exactly criterion 8's limit.** Reported as a
|
||||
pass because it is within the bar, and flagged because it has no margin: one more holdout failure
|
||||
puts the generalisation gap out of tolerance, which is the criterion's way of saying the fix should
|
||||
be re-checked on a wider anonymous set before anyone relies on it.
|
||||
|
||||
`onlinegdb` is excluded on the agent's own word with no page evidence, which is the weakest kind of
|
||||
exclusion this harness allows; it is reported as such and not banked.
|
||||
|
||||

|
||||
|
||||
## 4c. The exclusion that decides criterion 1, and it is UNVERIFIED
|
||||
|
||||
`onlinegdb` leaves the denominator on `decline: signed OUT (composer withheld, sign-in offered)`.
|
||||
That label is NOT page evidence. `looks_signed_out()` is consulted **only on the already-failed
|
||||
path** (`browser_send_script.py`, "Consulted only here, on the already-failed path") -- it names a
|
||||
failure that has already happened, it does not cause one. onlinegdb offers a Login link like most
|
||||
sites; that is enough to earn the label.
|
||||
|
||||
So the row is a composer MISS wearing an account-state badge, and coverage.py flags it exactly right:
|
||||
`signed out per the agent, UNVERIFIED (no wall evidence)`, with the standing instruction to *confirm
|
||||
by hand before quoting any number that leaves them out*. **I quoted 100% without doing that.**
|
||||
|
||||
Page evidence, such as it is: perception saw `textboxes=3`, and the only named element in the
|
||||
artifact is `[39]<textbox "">` -- an UNNAMED textbox, which is precisely ACE's hidden proxy input.
|
||||
onlinegdb does not gate its editor behind an account, so the exclusion is probably wrong and this is
|
||||
probably our miss. It could not be confirmed independently: onlinegdb returns HTTP 403 to fetchers.
|
||||
|
||||
**Criterion 1 therefore reads two ways and both are published:**

||||
page itself proved.
|
||||
|
||||
**Next step to settle it:** confirm onlinegdb's anonymous editor by hand in the Electron window, and
|
||||
if it is reachable, criterion 1 is 83% and the ACE fix is incomplete rather than done.
|
||||
|
||||
## 5. Criterion 5 / 6 - timing (5 PASSES on median; 6's metric was measuring the wrong thing)
|

### The instrumentation defect
|
||||

||||
`metrics_started_at` is set at `browser_agent.py:1346`; prestage runs at lines 1233-1262, i.e. it
|
||||
completes **before the timer starts**. Over the 93 successful runs in `results/known_raw.jsonl`:

### Prestage measurements (criterion 5)

**Correction to an earlier reading in this same session.** The first pass reported "median 3.4s,

FAIL" by taking the median over ALL prestage runs. Criterion 5 does not ask that: it asks for

- **settle failed, 21%**: ~3.07s per failure. Not always the page's fault — on YouTube the aux

||||
clicked the "Home" link while already on the home page, a guaranteed no-op, and settle spent its
|
||||
full 3066ms proving it.

Aux plan calls cost 780-1590ms each (median ~1100ms), so a looped prestage spends ~2.2s of model
|
||||
time to learn nothing.
|
||||
|
||||
Two costs identified:

- **aux plan calls: 780-1590ms each** (median ~1100ms).
|
||||
- **failed settles: 5 of 21 (24%), ~3.07s each**, 15.6s of dead time in one 9-site sweep. Root cause
|
||||
is not always the page: on YouTube the aux model clicked the "Home" link while already on the home
|
||||
page, a guaranteed no-op, and settle spent its full 3066ms discovering that.
|
||||
|
||||
### The fix, and why it is UNVERIFIED
|
||||
|
||||
`settle()` slept **0.35s before its first look** — the exact bug `browser_send_script.py` documents
|
||||
fixing in its own polls ("these fixed pre-sleeps are the bulk of it"), never applied to prestage. A
|
||||
tier-0 hit spent 1469ms of its 3244ms there. Replaced with a probe-first ladder
|
||||
`(0, 0.12, 0.18, 0.25, 0.35, 0.5, 0.6, 1.0)`; same checks, same 3.0s cap. Probing at zero is safe
|
||||
because every clause demands evidence of CHANGE.
|
||||
|
||||
**It has not been measured.** An apparent "1469ms -> 375ms" improvement was checked against
|
||||
timestamps and found to be pre-fix data: the newest settle line was 17:01:50 while the post-fix runs
|
||||
were at 17:32+, which logged no settle lines at all because prestage was skipped by the 429. The fix
|
||||
is reasoned and unit-tested, not measured. **Next step: re-run after the quota resets.**
|
||||
|
||||

|
||||
|
||||
## 5b. Criterion 6 - other_ms reduced 53.7%, and the cause was a constant
|
||||
|
||||
The baseline was not just large, it was **suspiciously identical**: every send-script run reported
|
||||
`other=2610..2613ms` whether `tools_ms` was 316ms or 14488ms. A number that refuses to move with the
|
||||
work is not work, it is a fixed sleep, and that is what it was.
|
||||
|
||||
`browser_send_script.py`, the composer poll taken whenever prestage staged no composer -- which is
|
||||
nearly every run -- slept a blind `0.0 + 1.2 + 1.4 = 2.6s` before falling through to the opener and
|
||||
the structural finder that actually locate the box. Forty lines below it, the OPENER poll already
|
||||
does the right thing and says so: *"Wait for the surface to STOP MOVING, not for a number of
|
||||
seconds."* The first poll never got that treatment.
|
||||
|
||||
**Fix:** stop when two consecutive element-list reads are identical. A mounting overlay keeps
|
||||
changing the list, so anything that genuinely needed the time still gets it; a settled page with no
|
||||
composer stops immediately instead of waiting out a budget it cannot use.
|
||||

**"Without shifting time into another category" is the part that had to be checked, and it holds:**

`tools_ms` is flat at 488ms and `llm_ms` is still 0, so the 1.4s did not move into either -- it
|
||||
stopped being spent. Reproduced on the holdout in the same run pair (`other_ms` 2612 -> 1211).
|
||||
|
||||
No regression: anon reach stayed 15/15 = 100% and holdout stayed 18/20 = 90% across the change.
|
||||
|
||||
## 6. Defects fixed
|
||||
|
||||
### Instrument (six)
|
||||
|
||||
1. **`coverage.py` preflight refused every sweep.** It counted `stack.sh`'s supervisor as a second
|
||||
backend: the supervisor is a `bash -c` whose command line quotes the whole uvicorn invocation, so
|
||||
it contains both `-m uvicorn backend.main` and `./backend/.venv/bin/python`, defeating the
|
||||
`/bin/python` filter added to exclude it. Now discriminates on POSITION. **This was a hard block:
|
||||
no measurement was possible at all.**
|
||||
2. **`stack.sh status` overcounted backends** (same cause).
|
||||
3. **`stack.sh status` reported 0 webpack over a live dev server** — webpack retitles its process, so
|
||||
the `bin/webpack` pattern never matched.
|
||||
4. **`c7_run.sh` / `c8_run.sh` had no TAG guard.** Both slice `r6_be.log` while `stack.sh` names its
|
||||
log after `TAG`; booting under any other tag would have graded 108 empty slices as a confident
|
||||
0/108. Now refuses loudly — it caught this exact mistake on its first use.
|
||||
5. **`api_retry` was not an infra marker.** A provider outage graded `bsky`, `mastodon` and
|
||||
`codemirror` as `product_no_composer` at 180-188s when they had been clean 15-21s exclusions all
|
||||
sweep. Now `infra_router` / `UNHEALTHY`.
|
||||
6. **`rate_limit_error` was not an infra marker.** A rate-limited prestage graded `0/1 measurable` —
|
||||
a quota wearing a product failure's badge.
|
||||
|
||||
Plus: fill-tier logging. The backend logged the frontend's FAILURE text but never its SUCCESS text,
|
||||
so `"via keystrokes"` could only ever appear inside an error — meaning `typeChars.ts`'s claim that
|
||||
"the 'via keystrokes' success line has never once appeared in a log" rests on a dead grep. The tier
|
||||
is now logged (never the payload) and registered in `verify_markers.py`.
|
||||
|
||||
### Product (one fixed, one implemented-unverified)
|
||||
|
||||
- **`find_composer` starved its own frame sweep.** A stuck eval costs
|
||||
`STUCK_EVAL_GRACE_MS (2500) + STUCK_EVAL_LIMIT_MS (9000)` = 11.5s, so retry-THEN-frames burned
|
||||
24.2s of a 30s budget before one frame was looked at: dpaste and disqus timed out 4/4 at exactly
|
||||
30s, logging "trying child frames anyway" nine times and "found in child frame" zero times. The
|
||||
sweep now runs BESIDE the retry, and is itself concurrent across frames.
|
||||
**Honest note: making the sweep concurrent alone did NOT move the metric** — the starvation was
|
||||
upstream of it. Starting it beside the retry is what fixed disqus; dpaste turned out to be offline.
|
||||
- **prestage `settle()` probe-first ladder** (criterion 5, unverified, above).
|
||||
- **prestage no longer navigates to the page it is already on.** The aux proposing back the entry
|
||||
URL it was just handed cost a `BrowserNavigate` plus a settle that could only ever fail, because
|
||||
settle compares the page against that same URL. `same_page()` refuses it before the command runs,
|
||||
one round earlier than the existing `seen_steps` repeat check and ~3s cheaper. Query strings are
|
||||
deliberately NOT normalised away: `?q=` is usually the whole difference between two pages.
|
||||
**VERIFIED in production** once the lane was restored: on w3schools the aux proposed back the entry
|
||||
URL and the guard fired, `nav ... is the page we are on; no progress, stopping`, with prestage
|
||||
costing **1460ms** instead of paying a navigate plus a settle that could only fail.
|
||||
|
||||
---
|
||||
|
||||
## 6b. Criterion 9 - the replay boundary was mis-classifying a focus as a send
|
||||
|
||||
Two defects, both fixed, both unit-tested:
|
||||
|
||||
1. **`is_replay_boundary` reasoned from the NAME alone.** x.com's composer is a textbox literally
|
||||
named `Post text`, so `\bpost\b` ruled it irreversible and the skill's replay truncated to a bare
|
||||
navigate: `PREFIX replay: 1/2 steps`. Clicking a text-entry box is a FOCUS, and focusing is
|
||||
reversible whatever the box is called. Now excluded by ROLE (`textbox`/`searchbox`/`combobox`
|
||||
only). A real Send is a button/link/menuitem, never a textbox, so this cannot let a send through,
|
||||
and `is_send_completed` already reasoned from role for the same reason.
|
||||
2. **`first_unsafe_step` dropped `role` from its probe**, so the fix above would have been dead on
|
||||
arrival: recorded steps carry `params.role` (the distiller sets it) and it was never passed on.
|
||||
|
||||
**This does not by itself make criterion 9 passable, and the reason is the finding.** Both recorded
|
||||
skills are `[navigate, click composer-textbox]` and neither contains a genuine opener step. With the
|
||||
boundary corrected the x.com prefix becomes nav + composer-focus -- but the send-script already owns
|
||||
composer discovery, and it POLLS for a lazily-mounted overlay, which a statically recorded click
|
||||
cannot do (that race is why composer-stripping exists behind `OSW_REPLAY_SENDTAIL`, default off).
|
||||
So the replayable content of these skills reduces to a navigate, and prestage already reaches a
|
||||
tier-0/1 composer in 2736ms median without one.
|
||||
|
||||
That is the evidence for taking criterion 9's REMOVAL branch, which the criterion explicitly allows.
|
||||
Not executed here: removing a product feature whose end-to-end behaviour cannot currently be measured
|
||||
is a change that should be made with a working model lane, and the two `browser-memory` endpoints
|
||||
have zero callers in `frontend/src` or `electron/`, so nothing about that decision is urgent.
|
||||
|
||||
A pre-existing gap noticed while testing, filed not fixed: `P_COMPOSE_SEL_RE` matches composer
|
||||
selectors by WORD (`message|compose|comment|...`), so typing into a generically named
|
||||
`div[contenteditable]` is not caught by that clause. Other guards cover the send itself; this is
|
||||
noted so the next person does not discover it as a surprise.
|
||||

309 lines, over the 300-line `max-file-lines` limit. It was missed at first because the check ran

before the part of the linter output being read, so an earlier "no new violations" claim in this

||||
session was based on truncated output. Condensed to 298 and re-verified against the stashed
|
||||
baseline.

## 8. Next executable steps, in order
|
||||
|
||||
1. Set `connection_mode=own_key` + an Anthropic API key, or wait for the Pro reset (~20:31).

2. Sign in to x, linkedin, reddit, instagram, youtube, twitch **in the Electron window running with
|
||||
`--user-data-dir=e2e/browser-v3/runs/udd`**. Any other browser profile does not count.

||||
3. Re-run `c7_run.sh` at N=12 to verify the criterion-5 settle fix and give criteria 1, 4, 6, 7 a
